• XP Plate

The new curved Level III+ XP Plate uses our lightest most advanced steel. The stand alone plate comes with an NIJ Certification for Level III and actually far exceeds those standards.  It provides slightly more protection area than our Pro Plate while using the same lightweight 5mm AR-600 core and GT Advanced Ballistic Coating.   After extensive live fire testing and unparalleled results, hundreds of Law Enforcement Departments across the US are switching over to these plates.  Simply put, these plates are the most cost effective protection against modern day threats.

With an NIJ Certification for Level III and a "+" rating for special threats, the XP Plate is changing the game in terms of what steel armor is capable of.  Many steel armor plates fall victim to the popular M855 or M193 rounds particularly at distances of less than 30ft or from barrels of 20" or more.  Not the XP.  Its not only been tested effective at stopping and fully encapsulating the .308 at 2750fps, but its also rated to handle both M855 and M193 out of a 20" barrel at only 10ft away!  You will not find protection at this level for less.

Most ceramic plates weigh in at 8lbs or more.  Composite plates are light, but they fall victim to the popular M855 round and create huge back face deformation and blunt force trauma.  The XP Plate is the perfect balance.  The final weight of these plates is only 7.2lbs (+/- 5%).  Thats right, the XP Plate weighs less than ceramic and is 25%-30% lighter than other steel armor.  We use a 5mm (3/16) ISO Certified AR-600 core for these plates which dramatically reduces weight compared to ceramics, increases stopping power over AR-500 steel armor, and dissipates blunt force energy better than any composite armor.  It does all this while still providing special threat protection against M855 and M193 rounds at as little as 10ft!

Looking for the same protection level with a little less weight? Check out the new Pro Plate with a slim design!

Worried about multiple hits? Watch a single XP Plate take hits from M855 @ 10ft, then M193 @10ft, then 7.62x39 steel core @ 10ft, then .308 @ 60ft, then 30-06 @ 60ft, and finally 12ga slug at 20ft... all on the same plate! No penetrations, full encapsulation, no tears in the carrier.  Watch the test HERE.

Most composite or ceramic armor is almost 7/8"-1" thick making movement and shouldering more difficult.  With a finished thickness of ~7/16" this is also some of the thinnest armor on the market. You may be able to find thinner steel armor but not without sacrificing the thickness of the ballistic coating. The XP is simply the thinnest, most durable, fully coated armor available.

The XP comes standard with the new Steel Ops "True Curve" profile which gives the shooter a more ergonomic fit to the body while providing a fracture free bending process on the steel.  It tappers at all corners for "shooters cut" movement and shouldering. This design maximizes movement and provides a true 10" x 12" protection area unlike many ceramic or composite plates that measure 10"x12" but only provide 8"x10" of protective coverage.

The XP plate features Steel Op's latest GT Advanced Arma Guard ballistic coating. This coating has been tested effective for encapsulating 99% of bullet fragments from 15 rounds of Steel Core 5.56 at only 10ft and up to 20 rounds of 9mm at only 10ft away. The coating was actually developed for the United States Military as an anti-fragmentation coating on the bottom of MRAP vehicles to protect against IEDs.  Its effectiveness has yet to be matched by other products on the market and frequently outperforms common coatings such as Line-X or Rhino Linings.  Stop buying truck bed liner with a fancy name folks!  At Steel Ops we don't offer "Base Coats" or "Build Up Coats".  All of our armor receives a full 188-200 mil coating.  This is the same thickness that you pay extra for when you buy the other company's "Build-Up Coat".  Don't pay more for something that should be standard, and never use steel armor with less than 188 mils.

Worried about angled impacts?  Our armor & coating has been tested effective at encapsulating 95%-99% of fragmentation at 45 degree angles, and 80%-90% of fragmentation at 60 degree angles. Even at ambush type angles these plates provide life saving protection better than ceramics which have no fragmentation control or composites that simply allow the bullet to pass thru.  Watch as we test the plate at 45 and 60 degree angles from only 10ft away by clicking HERE.

Its imperative that all categories are taken into consideration when purchasing armor. Weight, Cost, Durability, Protection Level, Fragmentation Control, Shelf Life, and Special Threat Protection are all things you should consider when buying armor. The new XP Plate offers superior performance in all categories and that is why it is quickly becoming the chosen armor for active LE and security professionals across the country.  Check out our "Use It, Don't Lose It" armor replacement policy under the "Terms" tab at the bottom of the page.  Choose wisely and remember not all armor is created equal.

    Angled Impact Test Video

In an effort to continually improve our quality control and deliver a more thorough product all armor plates manufactured after January 1st, 2018 will have a "core test sample point" on the back of the plate. This sample point will look like a small 1/8" hole in the coating on the backside of the plate located within a square on the label. This is not a hole in the steel and you will be able to see raw steel inside. This is not a flaw and this hole is intentional.  This sample point is part of an exhaustive quality control process to ensure that our coating, the steel, and the bonding properties between the two are correct.  Although the coating does not entirely envelope the plate, this sample point does not in any way impact the durability, stopping power, fragmentation control, or overall effectiveness.  This is simply for us to ensure that these plates are being made to our rigorous specifications.  We are proud that we have never once had to issue a recall, nor have we ever had a plate not meet the quality and performance standards listed, and this is one more way to guarantee that will continue.  Should you ever find a flaw in the coating outside of the designated "core test sample point" box, please let us know.
